Seperation for the betterment of society

You know when forming any group it is difficult to do what is best for all.  It is even harder to do what is right for all when your own belief get in the way of what is “Right”.  Since our great country’s conception there have always been problems with government.  Even the Father of our country did what was best for him and not necessarily ALL the people.

We still live in a time when our government cannot separate themselves from their personal beliefs and do what is right for the country and ALL that live here.  Our country has the largest prison and jail population in the world.  Do you really believe that we have the largest population of horrible people in the world?  Or do you believe that our laws need to be revisited?  The latter is probably the truest.  But our biggest problem in this country when in regards to government is that most of our government either didn’t read the constitution or just don’t care what it says and just want to do their own thing.

We have a set of basic beliefs in our constitution in regards to our country.  The most disregarded is the “Separation between church and state”.  For one reason or another the people making up our government cannot seem to do so and in my opinion should not be dictating laws.  You cannot truly make laws for everyone if you disregard other people’s beliefs or lives.  When elected to office every Representative should have to take a lie detector test to see if they can truly set aside their personal beliefs for the betterment of all.  But that will NEVER happen since that would leave them open to other questions regarding “Money”.  According to some “The root of all evil”.

Believe it or not “Money” was in part the cause of what happened on 9/11 and it would be difficult to deny it.

But back to what makes a great Representative.  A great Representative looks out for all the people, even when it is not convenient for them.  They make decisions based on the betterment of society not just the pocketbook.  But of course, in today’s society you have to prove what is better for the pocketbook instead of what is better for society.

For instance, Marijuana is a multi-billion dollar business here in the United States and that is while it is illegal.  Most of the people in prison are there for Marijuana related offenses.  So while this multi-billion dollar business is alive and well the taxpayers are not only paying for all the people in prison but paying for law enforcement to take it off the street.  Yet it still remains California’s number one “Cash crop”.  For every dealer that is taken off the street there are a few thousand ready to take their place.

Gay Marriage, while it goes directly against some peoples religious beliefs it is not against all.  This is where that “Freedom of Religion” comes into play and doing what is right for society and not what is right for you.  When New York legalized Gay Marriage they introduced over $800 million dollars into their economy the first year according to studies.  And while your religion may say that Gay Marriage is wrong, mine does not.  So by denying Gay Marriage are we really doing what is best for society?  Are we just trying to be true to our own religion?  Or are we just trying to get re-elected?  Whatever the cause, the reality is it will infuse more money into the economy.  The State of Nevada has changed their constitution to only recognize marriage between a man and a woman.  They have slit their own wrist and have now recognized it because there is a bill on the floor right now to change their constitution to allow Gay Marriage.  Their pocketbooks have seen the light.  Nevada is the marriage capital of the United States and is slowly seeing it slip away.  After seeing what has happened in New York they realize just how much money is slipping away every day.

I guess what I am trying to say is just this, when you are elected into office as a REPRESENTATIVE of a group of people.  You need to reflect what is best for the ENTIRE group of people you are representing.  Sometimes the hard decisions are to be made by putting your personal baggage behind you and do what it right for all, not just some.  Since the majority of our Representatives are millionaires they really need to see things as, not what you are putting into your pocket but the pockets of the people.  Corruption is alive and well in our government as it was when this country was first founded.  After a few hundred years, wouldn’t it have been nice to see it rooted out?

North Korea life vs. life in the United States

This morning I read an article about life in North Korea.  I found it disturbing.  It spoke about imprisonment and life in general.  Below is an out take of the article:

All the fanciful and funny myths about North Korea’s dictators cover up a disturbing truth, however: Some 154,000 North Koreans live in prison camps, according to South Korean government estimates. (Other international bodies put the number at closer to 200,000). There are six camps, surrounded by electrified barbed wire. Two camps allow for some “rehabilitation” and release of prisoners, according to “Escape from Camp 14: One Man’s Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West” (Viking, 2012). The rest are prisons for life.

“Escape from Camp 14″ tells the story of Shin Dong-hyuk, the only person known to have escaped from one of these camps and to have made it to the outside world. Shin was born in the camp; his father was imprisoned because his brother had abandoned North Korea for South Korea decades earlier.

Torture, malnutrition, slave labor and public execution are ways of life in the camps, which are known from satellite imagery. An Amnesty International report in 2011 estimated that 40 percent of camp prisoners die of malnutrition.

This is really sad and to think that people in North Korea know this as the norm.  The children there think that eating bark off trees is a normal thing throughout the world.  The teachers and children that go to school learn of nothing but North Korea and their accomplishments but the real reason they go to school is to be fed.

Below is some information concerning prisons here in America.  You will see that we have far more people in prison than necessary.  You see we put people in prison for drug possession and the intent to distribute.  This is really unnecessary.  Why should the American Taxpayer pay for such a thing.  These people if anything should be placed on house arrest and forced to find employment to pay their own way.  Even if it is working on farms.

I know this is controversial but I really don’t think that people should be placed in prison for marijuana possession or the intent to distribute.  This is a whole area that most people would not agree with but it is a non violent crime and when compared to alcohol effects you will find that marijuana is far less impairing.  The prohibition of marijuana is really silly.  We are dooming our young with a felony on their record just for trying out the drug.  Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a job with a felony on your record?  And if you really sit down and think of it.  How many people can say with all honesty they haven’t tried marijuana?  Most people that say they haven’t are liars.  The difference is that the ones that tried it just didn’t get caught.

Incarceration in the United States is one of the main forms of punishment, rehabilitation, or both for the commission of felony and other offenses. The United States has the highest documented incarceration rate in the world. At year-end 2009, it was 743 adults incarcerated per 100,000 population.[4][7][8][9][10]

According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), 2,266,800 adults were incarcerated in U.S. federal and state prisons, and county jails at year-end 2010 – about 0.7% of adults in the U.S. resident population.[7] Additionally, 4,933,667 adults at year-end 2009 were on probation or on parole.[4] In total, 7,225,800 adults were under correctional supervision (probation, parole, jail, or prison) in 2009 – about 3.1% of adults in the U.S. resident population.[3][4][11]

In addition, there were 70,792 juveniles in juvenile detention in 2010

I would like to thank Wikipedia for the above information.  As you can see we imprison more of our population than North Korea.  The conditions in prison here in the United States are better but the numbers are staggering.  So once again just something to think about.

Put on your thinking caps!

More and more from North Korea.  First of all please refer to this article:  http://news.yahoo.com/un-sanctions-may-play-north-korean-propaganda-110025232.html  it outlines the stance that China has played in the past with sanctions against North Korea.

China is the number one supplier of oil and food to North Korea.  Also North Korea has had luxury items smuggled into the country through Chinese ports.  It is no surprise that North Korea relies on China and China relies on North Korea for trade.  China is able to have items made in North Korea even cheaper than in China.  This is a good deal for China, but goods made in China are already cheap, just how low do they want to go?  The only real export from North Korea is minerals because they have or consume everything else.  But when they have imports from China of components to make goods they do so for a pittance.  North Korea’s Gross National Product is supposedly less than 2 billion dollars.  Keep in mind that is a guesstimate because North Korea doesn’t report its GNP.  North Korea’s largest export throughout the world is counterfeit currency, drugs, and of course information.  When I say information I refer to missile and nuclear plans to whatever country will pay for them.

North Korea and Russia were allies at one time.  Russia supplied them with information as well as submarines and other weapons.  North Korea’s are not a stupid Nation.  They have managed to live with sanctions for decades and know how to reverse engineer (take things apart and create one just like it).  This has plagued Russia in the past when dealing with China.  North Korea also has the ability to get on the Internet and find out whatever they want.  Spies R Us!  They don’t have to have Internet connections in North Korea, just spies in other countries feeding information back to their regime and feed it they do.  As you well know you can find out most anything that you want to know on the Internet.  This has probably had a lot to do with their ability in recent years to advance their missile and nuclear capabilities.  Not to mention the fact that North Korea isn’t threatening to launch a nuclear missile at the United States.  It is threatening a preemptive strike against the United States.  There is a huge difference.  With their limited nuclear technology it is not out of the scope of reason that they have the ability to deliver a nuclear weapon.  Not in the conventional sense but a “dirty bomb” so to speak.  Damage from a “dirty bomb” is not in the course of actual destruction but radiation.  Also another factor that you have to take into account is they are saying an attack on the United States.  Every ship in the United States fleet is considered United States territory, and most wars have started at sea.

While Washington sits around so smug saying the United States is capable of shooting down any missile from North Korea, they are not taking into account that there are many, many, different ways to deliver a nuclear attack without use of a missile.  The purpose of this post is not to scare you in any way, but to enlighten you as to what North Korea is truly capable of.  We should not take these as idle threats, but should actually look at this rhetoric as a creditable threat.  We aren’t dealing with his daddy anymore.  Which dealt out threats on a daily basis.  We are dealing with a new regime that within the last year has conducted nuclear testing and launched a missile into space.  North Korea’s new leader has something to prove to the world and taking on the strongest Nation in the world would definitely set the tone and prove he is to be taken seriously.

Here we are…

Now that we have hit March 1st, we are also being hit by March 1st.  We are now going to have less National Security, less Cyber Security, just less as a whole.  We can work as a Nation with this mess.  We will have longer lines at airports, less flights, and more crowded flights.  This is not something that is going to devastate our Nation.  It will just slow it down a bit.  Well quite a bit.  I know that most of you won’t even notice this mess at all.  Because it does not directly effect you.  But what you must understand is that it does effect you.  Of course, I am talking National Security.  We are making ourselves more vunerable.  Taking ourselves back a decade or so.  I suggest that we all pray our butts off that our enemies we have been fighting and are now working out of Africa, do not take advantage of our situation.  Or perhaps an attack on our allies, when we only have one carrier group in the region.  Just so you know, one carrier group is capable of many things.  But two are more than capable of a war.  We are not totally defensless, we just don’t have the defenses we should have according to assessment.  Just something to think about…..

The Fiscal Cliff

Republican Congressional Representatives keep jabbing at the White House for not coming up with a solution to this problem.  Isn’t this what Congress is for?  Didn’t we vote for them so they could fix these types of problems?  Don’t they have the capability to take on these types of problems?

It is not up to the White House to come up with a solution to this problem.  It is up to Congress.  I mean they have a few hundred members and could easily put together a “think tank” to come up with answers to the Fiscal Cliff.  They want to chop areas where they have already allocated monies for this year.  They should be concentrating on the 2014 budget.  They haven’t spent the money already and the way to pay off a debt is to come up with a rational plan to do so.  All they have to do is identify areas to cut back and do it in the next fiscal year not in the year they have already allocated monies for.

We have waited this long for a solution to this problem then we can wait a couple more months.  Congress has failed us once again.  They continue to fail us.  And we need to have long memories so we can get rid of these people.  The Republicans in Congress should have, could have, but didn’t find an answer to this Fiscal Cliff.  The Democrats have put ideas before Congress just to have them shot down because the Republicans are busy playing politics.

Enough with the politics!  It is time to pay our bills and fix the deficit starting in our 2014 budget.  They have already spent the money from the 2013 budget but don’t want to pay the bill.  Another case of Republican “Dine and Dash”.  Don’t be a fool, see this for what it is.  Political posturing.  We cannot fix this problem in a couple of months, we have to have sound thinking and a fiscally sound answer to fixing the National Debt.  Take the time and do it right the first time.  Don’t just pull the plug on social programs that are actually working.  Pull the plug on programs that are not working.  Like giving big oil companies millions of dollars.  That is one area that can go. It would be shameful for Congress not to act responsibly and pay our debts now then cut our debts starting in the 2014 budget.  Sure we can cut money now but where would it get us?  It would be hasty and they probably wouldn’t cut the money from the areas that it really should be cut.

Foriegn aid continued

This is just an idea to boost the economy in the United States.

I am not saying that Foreign Aid is not necessary, I am saying that there are other ways of providing it to ensure the people it was intended for receive it.  Right now the American Government is paying farmers not to farm their land.  This is artificially keeping the price of food and grain up.  There is another path to follow that will do more for the economy and ensure that the food is going to the people in foreign countries.

If the United States Government were to allow farmers to farm all their land.  Then pay a fair price for the food and grain produced by the farmers that will keep the price up so they are making money.  That would also keep $51.6 Billion dollars in the economy.  Farmers would have to hire additional help to maintain the farms thereby creating jobs that would be here to stay.

The United States Government doesn’t consider Foreign Aid which is only 1% of the budget an area they are concerned with because it is such a small amount.  By sending food and grain to foreign countries they are keeping the foreign governments from keeping all the money for themselves.  Which is what is going on right now.  The United States Government, by paying attention, to Foreign Aid and utilizing the monies to make farming what it used to be.  $51.6 Billion is no drop in the bucket to the American People but it is to Congress.  But imagine putting that money into the economy and paying farmers a fair price for their products.  You would not only be saving a great deal of this countries way of life but you would be ensuring that Foreign Aid would be in the form of food, which is what they need right now.

So my thinking is to keep the money here in the United States.  Pay the Farmers a fair price for their produce, keeping the price up.  Put $51.6 Billion dollars back into the economy.  Increase the number of people working, thereby increasing the tax base for the country.  And most importantly keeping foreign governments from keeping the money to become richer and giving the food to the poor.  We did do this for years, since our country was built on the backs of farmers.  But the American Government was not paying a fair price thereby causing the price of grain and food products to fall.  The American Government also decided that sending money would allow foreign governments to pay a fair price for food grown on their own soil.  This program hasn’t worked in decades.  It is time to go back to paying American Farmers a fair price for their produce and sending food to other countries, not money.

Just a thought, maybe you would like to think about it as well.  $51.6 billion is a great deal of money and it should be put back into the American Economy!

American Default

Currently, Congress is considering letting the country go into default which of course would cause a shut down of government.  Now you may ask “What does this mean to me?”.  The answer is simple.

When Congress considered such a thing last year, it caused America’s credit rating throughout the world to drop.  And that is just because they let things run too long and didn’t deal with the National Debt Ceiling in a timely manner.

Here is how it affects you personally.  If you know someone that is drawing Social Security, Disability, Veterans benefits, military retirement, or even in the military they will not be getting paid.  Not until government is up and running again.  This will cause all those that depend on this pay to not be able to pay their bill and will cause their credit score to drop for lack of payment.  It could potentially cause evictions, foreclosures, and repossessions.  Not to mention the non payment of bills by medicare or medicaid.

I recall one other time that government shut down for over a month.  I was in the Navy and we didn’t get paid.  There was a great deal of discord and most of the men on the ship were extremely reluctant to perform their duty.  Now don’t get me wrong, they did do their job but it was very reluctantly.  Most of them would say they are going to do what they are getting paid for and that was nothing.  As one of the Supervisors, I have to say that I sympathized with them.

Right now the Republicans are going to cause irreparable damage to the economy and the world.  The President has said that he is willing to work with Congress to fix the spending problem.  He just is not willing to work it out with a “gun held to his head.”  This is not unreasonable.  Fixing the problems with spending in our great Nation should not be done with a threat held over anyone’s head.  It should be done in a sane, rational manner.  Congress has caused this debt and now after having dinner it is time to pay the bill.  But they are threatening to “dine and dash” so to speak.

Who is to blame?  Anyone that voted a Republican Congressional Representative into office.  You asked for this and now you are going to get it.  Great job!!!

Fiscal Mess

You may ask yourself what got us into this Fiscal Mess to start with, well here are the answers to begin with:

Bush Tax Cuts – $1.6 Trillion

Health Care Entitlements – $1.6 Trillion.  This is because the “Baby Boomers” became of age to collect.  The U.S. Government only knew this was coming by about 50 years or more.  Yet did nothing about it.

Medicare Drug Benefits – $300 Billion

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – $1.3 Trillion and counting.  For the actual numbers go to  http://costofwar.com/

Economic Stimulus Package – $800 Billion plus another $200 Billion in Bail Outs.

Unemployment and Tax Reduction – $400 Billion

The Great Recession Tax Loss – Billions of dollars

Total National Debt – $14.3 Trillion – the deficit is just the interest owed.

Congress is calling for cuts in programs to reduce the National Debt.  By ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and creating an environment that allows for job growth increasing Americas tax base, will cut the amount being spent and increase the countries revenue.  The revision of the tax code will increase revenue for the country as well.  Cutting Foreign Aid will decrease spending.  Getting rid of the one dollar bill and changing it over to a coin will put another $30 million back into budget.  Lowering wages for Government Representatives.  Currently a Congressional Representative makes $174,900 a year plus total health care, dental, and vision.  It would make sense if they were doing their job but most of the time they cannot get a budget passed in time and they have come close to an entire Governmental Shut Down which has decreased our countries credit rating.  If this happens again it could cause damage to the entire global economy.

I actually spoke to my Congressional Representative, Dr. Joe Heck, regarding Foreign Aid.  He told me that it only makes up 1% of the Budget for the country.  I told him that you have to start somewhere and just because it only makes up 1% of the overall Budget doesn’t mean it doesn’t count toward fixing the countries Budget problem.

I think that our Representative are only looking at big numbers when they are trying to fix the economic problems.  What they have lost sight of is, save a penny soon you’ll have a nickel, save a nickel soon you’ll have a dime.  The small numbers can make a huge difference when you add them all up.

Let’s look at the facts.  The Government has known for over 65 years that we had a “Baby Boom” and that someday they would be getting their entitlements.  Yet they have done nothing what-so-ever to fix it.  They didn’t restructure anything, they didn’t increase taxes enough to cover the difference.  Now if you had a checkbook and you knew for 65 years that you were going to have to pay a bill, wouldn’t you have planned for it?

The war in Iraq.  We started a war with a country of “evil doers” and didn’t even go to war with the country that trained the men for 9/11.  We invaded their next door neighbors.  Weapons of Mass Destruction.  The Government knew there were no weapons of mass destruction that was just a ploy to justify the invasion.  We went to war on “Terrorist”.  That is just like the “War on Drugs”.  You cannot nor will not win period.  The War on Drugs has been going on for decades and yet the only thing it has done is increase the price of drugs here in America and made the Drug Dealers richer.  It doesn’t matter how many dealers you take off the street there are a few thousand waiting to take their place.  Just like the war on Terrorist.  It doesn’t matter how many you take off the street there are thousands to take their place.  Please don’t get me wrong, I do feel that America needed to increase their security measures.  At the time we were the ONLY country in the world that did not have airport security.  So yes we needed to beef up intelligence, increase security, and even make certain that we know what is going on in countries around the world.  But going to war on Terror is just plain silly.  You will always have terrorist no matter what.  You can take measures to make certain that another 9/11 doesn’t happen but you will never win the war on Terror!

We, as a country, need to revisit policies and programs that just don’t work.  We need elected officials that can see that even saving a penny that is needlessly spent is wrong.  We need to see those type of saving measures to fix our current Fiscal Mess and keep us out of future Fiscal Problems.
