The War on Drugs has been going on for decades and yet in Las Vegas you can get pretty much any drug you choose, if you go to the right neighborhood. In the United States alone the 2013 budget has spent $15 Billion dollars and the individual States have spent nearly double that. You can see how much has been spent so far at http://www.drugsense.org/cms/wodclock . This does not consider the cost of putting dealers in jail or prison. So what has the war on drugs really done so far?
So far the war on drugs has spent billions of dollars in foreign countries and the United States. The results, they have made the cost of drugs go up and the number of dealers increase here in the good old USA. When the DEA says that it has taken 300 million dollars worth of pot off the street. The fact is, there is no value to something that hasn’t been sold or even offered. So what they have done is burned a bunch of grass and increased the value of what is coming over to the USA. They have made the drug dealers richer. For every drug dealer they take off the street there are about a thousand willing to take their place dealing.
Why, because of “supply and demand”. The average drug dealer can make a couple of thousand dollars a night. That is far more than most Ivy League Graduates. The people here in the United States that want drugs are going to get them no matter what they have to pay. The reason the war on drugs isn’t working is because it should be concentrating on the people that need rehab and not imprisoning non violent offenders. The Government shouldn’t be taking the stuff off the street, they should concentrate on dealing with the real problem, the number of people demanding the stuff. There are people on welfare selling off their food stamps intended for their children, to get drugs. Even when Child Protective Services (CPS) takes their kids away, that is just one less thing they have to worry about. You have to remember that addicts have one thing on their mind and that is their next fix.
While the War on Drugs is a complete and total failure it has spent an unreasonable amount of money since inception. Every year we are spending a huge amount of money to keep marijuana off the street and have put a huge number of marijuana dealers in prison or jail. You have to take that into account because this is a non violent crime and we as taxpayers are paying for their food, clothing, and shelter. Even if you are in the military you have to pay for your clothing. So the American people are footing the bill for a failing program.
It is said that Marijuana is a “Gateway Drug”. Which is a bunch of horse crap. Just because you use marijuana doesn’t mean that you are going to use any other type of drug with the exception of coffee and alcohol. Marijuana arrest in this country is a non violent offense. Yet we arrest and jail them. That is the reason for over crowding in prisons and jails. Marijuana is no more harmful than alcohol, as a matter of fact it is far less harmful depending on the manner of ingestion. There has been a lot of people that disagree, but I am sure there is one thing that we can agree on, and that is taxpayers shouldn’t be paying for non violent crime offenders. Put them on a monitor and let them work and stay at home. Check on them infrequently and let them pay their own way.
I personally think that marijuana should be legal. I think that there is no difference between marijuana laws and prohibition laws. Obviously people want it and are going to get it regardless of the law. Yet we are spending billions of dollars taking it off the street which is only making what is on the street go up in price. So in essence the War on Drugs is actually making more dealers and making the cost of the drug go up making the drug dealers richer.
I want you all to understand, I am not saying that all drugs should be legal. But I am saying that marijuana which can and is being grown in every part of the America’s. Right now marijuana is the number one cash crop in the United States. However, the opium poppy cannot be grown in the America’s. It has to come from the middle east. There are a number of drugs that are derived from the opium poppy such as opium, heroin, and many more drugs, including pharmaceuticals. This is the area that we should be going after. We also should not put non violent offenders in jail or prison. We should allow them to work, go home, and such. We have the technology today to keep track of someone just by their cellphone. I am sure that there is a way to track the offender and put the cost on them not the people.
I know that this rant sounds a bit crazy, but this is a way to keep our prisons and jails from overcrowding. Cut the amount we spend on the “War on Drugs”. And let Americans have their way. Marijuana should be legal. We should apply the same rules of operating a automobile and tax the heck out of it. There are a great number of States that actually already have marijuana taxes on the books. The two States that legalized marijuana this last election have the right idea. Tax the sale, cut the number of non violent offenders in jail or prison, and apply the same laws as the use of alcohol.
Congress and the Senate are comprised of a group of old millionaire men. They are so far out of touch with what is going on in the Country they have no idea what the people want or need. Yet, they are deciding laws and not looking at the polls first. When asked they say it is for the people of their State, yet the people in their State in the polls say something entirely different. They need to revisit the War on Drugs and ensure that they are doing what the people want and need. Stop creating the problem and start being the solution to the problem!
